On June 29, 2024, at around 9 AM, an unidentified 51-year-old Texas driver crashed into a home at 2600 Block W Expressway 83, Eastbound Frontage, Mission, Texas. The incident happened near Jr’s Tires and Wheels, affecting a red Fiat and an unoccupied white GMC.
The driver was declared dead on the scene while the driver of the red Fiat was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Mission Police reported that no one was home at the time of the accident. “The home at the moment is for sale,” said Mission Detective and Public Information Officer Jorge Rodriguez Jr.
Authorities reported that firefighters were trying to decide the best course of action to get the driver out of the rubble while avoiding further structural damage. “At this moment firefighters are trying to strategize how to pull out the truck due to a high possibility of the house collapsing once they pull out the trailer,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez also added that the Public Works Department has been cooperating with the Fire Department on the scene.
“When we got here, we had an 18-wheeler that struck a car on the Expressway before hitting the house,” said Deputy Fire Chief Chris Navarrete. “It is a recovery operation,” said Navarrete. “It is not a rescue. There is no indicator that the driver is alive.”
Currently, there is no known cause of the accident. The driver’s family has been notified of his death and an autopsy will be conducted to help the investigation.
Navarrete advised the public to avoid the accident site to avoid crowding. “Traffic in general can just avoid the area,” he said. “That would be very helpful.”
