TYPES OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES

There are two different kinds of traumatic brain injuries: open and closed. An open brain injury occurs if the skull has been fractured, which usually is a result of an accident in which blunt force trauma has been applied directly to the head, such as a fall. A closed head injury does not encompass a fracture of the skull but can often lead to detrimental occurrences; such as the formation of dangerous blood clots or swelling of the brain. Either type of head injury can cause other damaging effects on the body, such as, but not limited to:

  • Paralysis
  • Coma
  • Seizures
  • Personality changes
  • Impairment of any the senses, such as loss of hearing, taste, smell, vision, or touch
  • Learning disabilities
  • Intracranial hemorrhaging (bleeding of the brain)
  • Subdural Empyema (infection of the brain)

The potentially detrimental and dangerous ways of a brain injury can be partially attributed to the difficulty in detecting such symptoms and injuries. Traumatic brain injuries can often not be seen by the naked eye and must be further examined to investigate all possibilities. Fortunately, there are common symptoms and behaviors exhibited by many victims of brain injuries that may prompt physicians to take a closer look.

The following is a list of symptoms often exhibited by victims of a brain injury:

  • Difficulty remembering recent events
  • Confusion
  • Habitual lethargy
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Weakness on one side or in certain extremities of the body
  • Numb sensation on one side or in certain extremities of the body
  • Severe headache
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Blurred vision
  • Stiff neck
  • Slurred speech
  • Scalp wound
  • Bleeding
  • Convulsions

TENDING TO A BRAIN INJURY

The State of Texas offers many services and groups that act on behalf of those who suffer from traumatic brain injuries. The Texas Traumatic Brain Injury Advisory Council was established in 2003 in order to inform state leadership of the needs of people with brain injuries and their families, to promote brain injury prevention and awareness throughout the state, to recommend policies and practices to the Governor and the Legislature to meet those needs, and to encourage research into the cause, prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury.

The Office of Acquired Brain Injury, a branch of the Texas Traumatic Brain Injury Advisory Council, was established in 2008. The purpose of this office is to provide guidance and service coordination information to survivors of acquired brain injuries and their families, including returning combat veterans, and to ensure a comprehensive system of care through federal, state, and local resources.

I SUFFERED A BRAIN INJURY. WHAT CAN I DO?

The proper treatment of a brain injury can be expensive, both emotionally and financially. Emergency treatment may be necessary, depending on the severity of the symptoms or injuries. Testing and imaging such as CT scans, MRIs, and X-rays may be required when trying to determine the extent or location of a brain injury. Neurological consultation or examination on an initial or repetitive basis may be necessary when treating the injury. These actions are helpful, but also extremely costly.

When you or a loved one is coping with a traumatic brain injury from a car accident, truck accident, construction accident, or motorcycle accident, hiring a caring and aggressive lawyer is imperative.
